Must see; the Irving Penn retrospective at the Grand Palais
What do Pablo Picasso, Yves Saint Laurent, Audrey Hepburn and Alfred Hitchcock have in common? These talented celebrities were among the many captured by the lens of Irving Penn, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century.
One hundred years after his birth, the Grand Palais pays tribute, following on from New York, to this talented American artist. Fashion, still life, portraits, nudes, street scenes... this retrospective explores all the creative aspects of Penn’s seventy-year career, with a particular focus on his attention to nuance and detail.
His work is characterised by its elegant simplicity and remarkable rigour. Regarded as the master of studio photography, he created in each portrait a sense of intimacy with his subject that is emblematic of his style.
