The COMPTOIR GÉNÉRAL
The entrance hidden behind the houses along the Canal Saint Martin holds the promise of an unexpected discovery. Enter Le Comptoir General and see The Endemic Garden, then cross The Abandoned Hall, the Classroom and The Ballroom to reach the bar. What is it all? Nothing less than the most cutting edge location in Paris, combining a gallery space, café, bar, bookshop and a museum. All this and yet so much more. People in the know come here for a drink and snacks ( even to have their hair done!), and find themselves in places as sensational as the Little Shop of Horrors (which has a touch of the jungle about it), the Court of Miracles (the toy store where nothing is lost and everything is repaired) or the Centre of Lost Objects (a mysterious stall containing treasures unearthed in remote areas, or maybe just in the neighborhood). There is even a second hand clothing store run by the Togolese, Amah Ayivi, where you 're sure to find something to please. Before you get there, check out the bizarre Cabinet of Sorcery, which will make your blood curdle in your veins.
