Canal Saint-Martin: our favourite walk in the neighbourhood

Canal Saint-Martin: an atmosphere like no other

As soon as you set foot on the Quai de Valmy, the scene changes. Cast-iron footbridges, locks catching the light, century-old plane trees, everything comes together to create a typically Parisian atmosphere, far from the bustle of the grands boulevards.

Unlike the Seine river, always beautiful but far more touristy, the canal is a place for living rather than sightseeing. Locals come here for their lunch break, to read on a bench, or simply to stroll along the water. Couples meet, wanderers get happily lost, and a few bold souls put together impromptu picnics with a bottle picked up from one of the neighbourhood's grocery shops.

Our must-visit addresses along the water

To make this walk a truly enjoyable experience, here are the three stops we recommend to all our guests.

  • Buddybuddy: a coffee shop serving unusual coffees and drinks made with nut butter. The ideal stop to start the walk on a high note or to take a creative break along the way.
  • Le Verre Volé: a true canal institution. A bistrot and wine bar, it serves natural wines, hearty local dishes and a warm, convivial atmosphere. The seasonal menu is always honest, simple and generous.
  • Antoine et Lili: a thoroughly Parisian shopping moment. This boutique offers women's clothing and home decoration, all crafted by hand. Colourful, joyful and utterly original, it is not to be missed.

Practical tips for the walk

Canal Saint-Martin is easy to explore on foot. We recommend setting off from Hôtel Fabric and heading up towards the Quai de Valmy : the journey takes around fifteen minutes and already takes you through several lively streets of the 10th arrondissement.

The walk is particularly lovely in fine weather, but the canal has its own charm in autumn too, when the plane tree leaves carpet the quaysides. In the morning, the atmosphere is calm and bright, perfect for photography enthusiasts who can set up their cameras on one of the pretty bridges. In the afternoon, the terraces come alive and neighbourhood life is in full swing.

Practical information

Allow 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the hotel, and plan for 2 to 3 hours to wander at a leisurely pace. The canal is accessible by metro via the République or Goncourt stations (lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11).

Why the canal?

Even though Canal Saint-Martin has become an increasingly popular destination for both tourists and Parisians in recent years, it has managed to preserve its neighbourhood character. You don't come here to tick off a tourist site — you let yourself drift, linger, and come back again. That is exactly what we love about Hôtel Fabric: helping you discover a Paris that is alive, away from the city's most well-trodden paths.
