David Hockney Exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton
Categories : Exhibition, published on : 6/23/25
The Fondation Louis Vuitton is dedicating an exceptional retrospective to David Hockney, one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. With more than 400 works spanning seven decades of creation, this exhibition promises to be a highlight of the Parisian cultural scene.
David Hockney, an oeuvre in constant reinvention
A key figure in contemporary art, David Hockney explores the connections between image, perception, and technology. From his early portraits in the 1950s to his recent digital experiments, the British artist has always reinvented himself—moving from oil to acrylic, from drawing to charcoal, from photography to iPad—without ever losing the expressive power and uniqueness of his vision.
The exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton offers a rich and immersive journey through his entire body of work. From the very first rooms, visitors will encounter major classics like A Bigger Splash and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)—iconic works from a California period filled with light and freedom. These masterpieces converse with his double portraits, monumental landscapes, and everyday scenes, captured with a sensitive and poetic precision.
A journey conceived by the artist himself
What makes this exhibition unique is David Hockney’s direct involvement in its design. He personally chose to begin the visit with the last twenty-five years of his work—a particularly fertile period marked by his return to England, his move to Normandy, and his digital experiments. Through this selection, he offers an intimate reading of his artistic evolution, his deep inspirations, and his way of seeing the world.
Each gallery has been designed as an autonomous yet interconnected sequence, creating a fluid and coherent narrative. The exhibition traverses the major themes dear to Hockney: nature, the seasons, portraiture, memory, music, and art history. It establishes a dialogue with Old Masters like Van Gogh, Cézanne, Fra Angelico, and William Blake, while asserting a radical modernity.
A total immersion in Hockney’s world
The exhibition takes over all 11 galleries of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Visitors will discover the 220 for 2020 series, created on iPad in Normandy, as well as monumental works like Bigger Trees near Warter—a grand homage to the English landscape. The rooms dedicated to portraits reveal a constant attention to the human figure, while recent compositions inspired by Munch and Blake unveil a more introspective and spiritual dimension.
The final installation, conceived as an immersive space blending music, dance, and projections, celebrates the artist’s love for opera and the performing arts. This ambitious scenography turns the visit into a total sensory experience.
An exhibition not to be missed in Paris in 2025
