Fashion on the Move exhibition at Palais Galliera

Categories : Exhibition, published on : 6/27/24

The "Fashion on the move" Exhibition at the Palais Galliera offers a captivating perspective on the interaction between clothing designed for physical activity and everyday wear. You will be prompted to reflect on the specialization of sportswear, the adaptation of women's attire for physical activity in the 19th century, the masculinization of women's fashion, and the integration of sportswear into our daily wardrobe.

With nearly 200 pieces from the Palais Galliera collections, you can admire three centuries of fashion evolution. From swimsuits to cycling outfits, motorist coats to jogging suits, each garment tells a unique story about our relationship with movement and fashion.

The exhibition also features exceptional loans from the National Museum of Sport in Nice, the Forney Library in Paris, CHANEL Heritage, the Emile Hermès collection, and the houses of Sonia Rykiel and Yohji Yamamoto. These contributions enrich the exhibition by offering a broader perspective on the evolution of fashion and physical activity through the ages.

The journey begins with the elegance of the 18th century, highlighting fans and cinched dresses that defined not only the silhouette but also the social role of women. Discover how clothing evolved to adapt to new social activities, such as outdoor walks, with the emergence of more fluid dresses and caracos to face the weather.

In the 19th century, the rise of horseback riding introduced long skirts to protect the legs of female riders, while hats with integrated monocles allowed riders to maintain a clear vision without dismounting.

The exhibition also highlights the impact of physical activity on the liberation of the body and the evolution of beauty standards. Discover how activities like cycling allowed women to push the boundaries of clothing, moving from skirts to trousers for greater freedom of movement.

For conservation reasons, the exhibition will be presented in three successive displays, with a five-week closure between each display. This rotation allows visitors to discover new pieces with each visit, offering a renewed experience each time.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore the evolution of fashion and the body in motion at the Palais Galliera. Book your visit now and dive into this fascinating exploration of the history of fashion and its inseparable ties with physical activity and movement.
