Matisse & Marguerite Exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris: A Journey into the Artist’s Intimate World
A must-see exhibition in Paris in 2025
The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris is hosting an exceptional exhibition dedicated to Henri Matisse and his daughter Marguerite. Titled Matisse & Marguerite, this unique retrospective explores the profound relationship between the painter and his discreet yet essential muse.
Who was Marguerite Matisse?
The eldest daughter of the renowned artist, Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse, remains relatively unknown to the general public. Yet she played a vital role in her father's life and artistic journey. As an inspiring model, intellectual confidante, and member of the French Resistance, she was one of Matisse’s most important personal and artistic pillars.
Over 100 works, including never-before-seen pieces
The exhibition features more than 110 works by Matisse, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, and ceramics. Some are being shown in France for the very first time, thanks to loans from prestigious private collections in the United States, Switzerland, and Japan. Others, more intimate, had never left the family’s private archives.
A fresh perspective on Matisse’s work
Presented in chronological order, the exhibition traces the evolving bond between father and daughter, from Marguerite’s childhood to the post-war years. She emerges not only as a model but also as an intellectual companion. Several works by Marguerite herself are also included, along with personal archives that enrich and humanize the narrative.
On view through August 24, 2025. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Late openings on Thursdays until 9:30 p.m.
