Mary Cassatt at the Musée d’Orsay: the exhibition to see this winter in Paris

Start the year with an inspiring Parisian escape. Until 31 January 2027, the Musée d’Orsay presents Mary Cassatt, the first major exhibition in France dedicated entirely to this remarkable artist. Held to mark the centenary of her death, the exhibition is also part of the museum’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The perfect opportunity to enjoy a cultural break in Paris and make Hôtel Fabric your home away from home.

Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist in Paris

Born in Pennsylvania, Mary Cassatt moved to Paris, where she joined the Impressionist circle at the invitation of Edgar Degas. She soon became one of the movement’s most distinctive and influential figures. Through her sensitive yet clear-eyed portrayals of women, children and bourgeois interiors, Cassatt developed an intimate artistic language entirely her own—tender, modern and free from sentimentality.

“The Independent”: Discovering Mary Cassatt’s Vision

The exhibition title perfectly captures Mary Cassatt’s spirit. Independence guided her life and her work, both as an artist and as a woman. Bringing together nearly 80 paintings, pastels and prints, the exhibition follows the full arc of her career. Previously unseen letters also shed new light on her role in the Impressionists’ celebrated “independent” exhibitions.

A few highlights to look forward to during your visit:

  • Young Girl in a Garden (between 1880 and 1882), from the Musée d’Orsay collection and selected as the exhibition’s signature image.

  • Young Girl with a Banjo (1894), a pastel recently acquired by the museum and presented to the public for the first time. This exceptional work evokes the monumental decoration Cassatt created for the Woman’s Building at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
